The Red by Tiffany Reisz

The Red

*ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review*

Mona Lisa St. James will do anything to fulfill the promise she made in her mother’s deathbed. Anything includes spending a year in the mysterious Malcolm’s bed to save the art gallery, The Red. In every night tryst with Malcolm brought her new experience and and feelings she shouldn’t explore. When the time comes would she able to let go? Or would she be sucked in the world Malcolm showed?

Is it hot in here?

This book is the perfect summer read. Seriously, this is so sizzling hot Mona and Malcolm gave new meaning to erotic fantasy. Their chemistry is off the charts from the very start. I couldn’t put it down, I finished in under three to four hours in one sitting. I don’t think this is what The Original Sinners (TOS)  readers expected but I loved it all the same! I love the art and history in this book. My knowledge of art is not extensive but I didn’t get lost because Ms. Reisz explained a great deal about the artists and the pieces.

Mona changed a great deal. She’s not a prude but she wouldn’t have walked the dark path if she hadn’t met Malcolm. It was interesting to watch her cave and let society’s conventions be damned. She was stronger and more confident than they first met. Malcolm Fitzroy is the best English rake I ever met. He is not only wholly inappropriate but totally unrepentant too. He played a lot of games without a care in the world but his desires. If only all men were that straight forward to what they want, women wouldn’t have to trouble with playing game with the heart.

The ending kinda blindsided me. I was expecting a very different ending for Mona and Malcolm. I mean, I fell in love with Malcolm so it’s fair to say that I want a happy ending for all. Actually, I didn’t expect the mystery behind everything about Malcolm. But he is a cheeky bastard, he lined up all his ducks in the end. I got over it pretty quickly once I saw the fun and hilarious (and HOT) side of it. I should know better than expect a conventional story from Tiffany Reisz.

There you go, I can’t say more or I’m gonna spoil you guys. I want to talk about another character, but I’m not sure if I’m allowed to because it will be a spoiler too. Anyway, The Red is coming on July 11, 2017. Don’t forget to pre-order!

Underworld Series by Chani Lynn Feener

*ARC provides in exchanged of honest review*

Spencer Perry would do anything to have Micah back into her life. Anything includes making a deal with the devil himself. Spencer barters six months of living in the Underworld in exchanged for her boyfriend’s life. Little did Spencer know that nothing would ever be the same. Will Spencer live through the consequences of her actions? Or would she be lured by a certain devil like Persephone did?

“Your existence hinders on no one but yourself. Only you can write your destiny. Fate is a mere parlour trick designed to coax you into believing otherwise. There is always a choice.”

I’ve been fascinated with Greek mythology since high school which made me sign up for a copy of Unhinged. I’ve never read a modern retelling of Hades and Persephone’s ‘love story’. It’s probably because Hades was the bad guy no one cared about. Or because he doesn’t have much cool tricks like Zeus and Poseidon. I was familiar with different versions of that ‘love story’ so I was expecting a little twist that would make this story unique.

I love the differences Chani Lynn Feener did. She changed a huge chunk of what we already knew and created a whole new concept. I love the diversity of this book. It was so refreshing to read new ideas and perspectives. I love the characters, though I had a hard time liking Spencer. Her personality varies so much. One minute she’s this tough girl and the next she’s swallowing her words. And I can’t stand how much she loves Micah. It’s probably because all I can see in Micah was this ghost that wouldn’t rest and move on. Things started to get interesting after we met Hades. I’m such a sucker for the bad guys. And the feels! Imagine spending twelve hours every day for a year with this guy… I know right?

I would’ve given this book a higher rating but it took me a while to get the hang of it. I think the world building could use a little more work. Not everyone knows the ins and outs of Greek mythology which could lead to some confused readers. I had this vision of Hades being the epitome of sin given that he ruled the Underworld, so I didn’t expect him to look like an eighteen year old guy. I gather that this is a YA Fantasy but I think we could’ve pushed him to be at least twenty years old. Despite all that, this is a really good read especially for those who loves Greek Mythology (like I do)!

Where One Goes by B.N. Toler

Where One Goes

For Charlotte Acres, seeing the dead is a curse. Sure, she can help the ghost with his/her unfinished business but at the cost of her normal life. Her parents paid her off to go away. Her friends abandoned a freak like her. She was ready to give up on her life by jumping off a bridge but a ghost saved her. Ike McDermott’s unfinished business is his twin brother, George McDermott. Together, Charlotte and Ike attempts to bring George back to live and learn to let go.

“I love you, too, baby girl,” he whispers. “Here, there, forever.”

This book just breaks my heart! My golly, I cannot. B.N. Toler never fails to write a book that would make readers cry like a baby. This is truly one of the most heartbreaking stories ever written. I feel like I’ve been through a roller coaster ride after reading this book. The feelings of these characters are so intense it practically clings at you. The stories of their pasts played a huge role in determining their future.

I liked Ike more than George. It’s probably because we were able to see only the good sides of him. He was the hero, the knight in shining armor who saved Char. On the other hand, we met George at his lowest point in life. He was able to redeem himself, of course, but it was like the damage has been done and I couldn’t forget his assholiness. But I still love them both… I just prefer the other brother. I truly feel for Char. I can’t imagine dealing with all the tragedies she faced in her life. I admire how strong and determine she became to continue living life.

The only thing I didn’t like is the love triangle between brothers… twins no less. I really had no patience with that. Thankfully, I was able to see the boys as separate identities. They were so different but similar in loving someone. Oh, I almost forgot about Sniper. I absolutely adore that man! Can we get his book? Pretty please.

See Me Duet by Wendy Higgins

See Me

Robyn Mason is unlike any seventeen-year-old American. She belongs to a magical family and bonded to marry McKale of Emerald Isle in Ireland. Her excitement to marry a young Irish lad turns to dust as obligations and true feelings came to the table. A Fae princess threatens to destroy what they built for her pure selfish gain. Robyn and McKale must trust one another to avoid falling in the clutches of the Fae princess’ hands for the survival of their families.

“The bad thing about romantics was they put themselves out there for heartbreak.”

I absolutely adore Wendy Higgins! I’ve never had much fun with leprechauns like this before. I love this new magical world. Ireland really is a magical place. I laughed and swooned and cried in all the right places. It is kind of light-fantasy for me but it’s not exactly a light read because of… you know that freaking ending!

I love that it isn’t really an insta-love for Robyn and McKale. Robyn may have started as in love with the idea of marriage with McKale but they were given a chance to really get to know one another. I find McKale adorable. He was the ‘giant’ among little people. He was not what I expected for our hero but I still loved him. He won me over by proving the man deserving of Robyn in the end.

Is it bad that I think Cass and Rock stole the show? We need book two! These two… it was just so heartbreaking! I just want to kick that princess in the ass for causing more grief!

Remember Me

Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance, Young Adult

Cursed by Jennifer L. Armentrout

High school student Ember McWilliams died in a car accident but her gifted little sister brought her back… but with grave consequences. Everything she touches dies. Enter, Hayden Cromwell. The promise of controlling her own powers enough to be able to touch her sister was too great, Ember decided to put their faith in Hayden and his father’s hand. But even in the midst of others with powers like her, Ember finds it hard to trust anyone. Harder still when it became obvious that someone wants her dead. Someone wants to finish what was started the ‘accident’ that killed her.

“You worry about hurting me, but you never seem to worry about me hurting you. And I’m the one with the killer touch.”

At first, I had reservations in reading this book. Ember was like Rogue in X-Men which took originality points from me. I thought it would be a predictable plot line where Hayden would be the knight shinning armor who would save Ember in her lonely existence. However, there were more things involved in the story. The ‘car accident’ started it all and there were secrets that need to be unearthed and bad guys to catch.

I truly love JLA’s writings. Her heroines always had that sarcastic, witty side that cracks me up. Ember may have dealt a bad hand but she’s not broken. She wasn’t selfish to mop all day but find strength in taking responsibility of her little sister. Hayden Cromwell is exactly what you expect from a hero. Gorgeous and beautiful and funny… and in love with our dear Ember. He had a way with words. I couldn’t help but smile and blush in all the right pages.

I truly love this book but I think it ended rather abruptly. I was expecting an ending with more ‘wow’ or ‘boom’ factor. There were still things that needed answers. I want more history, more data in their powers. And if would be just a standalone I think the world building was rushed a bit… but I would complain if there’ll be a few books in the future. *wink* *wink*

Psy-Changeling Season 1 by Nalini Singh (Part 1)

Slave to Sensation

Sascha Duncan’s Silence never did took hold and now twenty-six years later, her mind is in the brink of breaking. She dream and feel and she cannot hide it any longer. Her only choice is to break out of the PsyNet and die or turn herself over the Council and rehabilitate. That is, until she met the alpha of DarkRiver leopard changeling, Lucas Hunter. Lucas tries to infiltrate the Psy in order to find the serial killer responsible for the murders of young chanrling women. Unbeknownst to him, Sascha may be a cardinal Psy but her powers never manifested, thus having no position in the Council. Will Sascha help the changeling in bringing down one of her own people? Or would her loyalty to her people outweigh her feeling for a certain panther?

What a perfect book to start a series! I love everything about this book. It was so different, so diverse, so brilliant! You wouldn’t get bored. It is not only centered on Lucas and Sascha’s love story. There’s a matter of a serial killer on the loose and the Council. I love the political issues. I never thought I’d say that ever, but I love it! It was exciting and thrilling. I also love the other characters, especially Lucas’ sentinels. I can’t wait to hear their stories. Gah, this book is a royal package of feels!

“I wish I’d been born in another time, another place. Then maybe I could’ve escaped fate . . . maybe I could’ve been your darling.”

I love Lucas and Sascha together. They made my heart ache so bad I cried. Their scorchingly-hot chemistry didn’t hurt either though. I love how much of an alpha Lucas is. It was so hot; he made it to my fictional boyfriend list, lol. I also love Sascha even if she’s so stubborn she almost made our ship sink. I guess it was inevitable to love her because along the way her true designation was revealed.

I absolutely adore happy endings that made sense. I’ve read some books that tried to make miracles happen like rain, it never succeeded. I honestly didn’t expect a HEA for these two because their love is just so heartbreaking. They’re from different races and all. I loved how it all turned out in the end.

Visions of Heat

As the most powerful F-Psy in her generation, Faith Nightstar knew that her chance of succumbing to madness is only a matter of time… especially after nights of feeling darkness and terror in her mind. With the news of her sister’s murder, she risk leaving the safety haven of her compound to seek the guidance of Sascha Duncan in the heart of changeling leopard’s territory. Being captured by the jaguar, Vaughn D’Angelo, was not part of the plan. It is not only battle of minds and hearts that awaits in the horizon. Will Faith fight to maintain her conditioning under silence? Or would she surrender in the arms of a changeling only to battle his own darkness?

The dynamics of this series is really astounding! Every turn of the page I’m holding my breath because there may be new revelations since our Psy is a Foreseer. It was so cool! I also find the history of Silence fascinating. The history is so vast; I don’t think it would ever end. I’m hungry for more details about the Mercury, Adelejas and the Arrows!

“Human women have been slapping men for being bastards for centuries. You were doing what comes naturally.”

I truly find Vaughn’s character interesting. The dark brooding male who blends in the shadows always caught my eye. I just knew in the first book that this dominant male will not fall short in making us squirm. *wink wink* I absolutely love the mating dance between these two! Gah, the feels. I felt frustration too because like Sascha, Faith took her damn time before accepting her mate! But it builds up some passionately-hot love scenes. I’m blushing just by remembering it.

I was truly shocked by Anthony’s character. I didn’t expect that to happen at the end but I love it! I think only few could’ve known the complexity behind Anthony… which makes him more interesting for the rest of the series. It just keeps on getting better and better. I foresee more complicated plot twist ahead and I cannot wait!

Caressed by Ice

After the traumatic experience under Councilor Enrique’s hands, Brenna Kincaid no longer bear wounds and bruises but for the dream-visions that’s making her think she’s gonna go insane. She also hasn’t forgotten that Enrique had some help in her abduction and this individual threatens to shatter whatever peace she managed to build. These were not the only threats Brenna sees in the future but also her growing desire to the former Arrow, Judd Lauren. For those who had deadly abilities like Judd, Silence was the answer. He can’t afford to break free if it means harming his family. But with the persistent danger coming Brenna’s way, can Judd suppress his urges to protect her? Will Brenna accept the chances that Judd cannot break from Silence?

I admit that I didn’t expect the third book to be about Judd and Brenna. Looking back, they both made huge impressions on the first two books. But I thought the sentinels of DarkRiver would have their turns first before jumping to the SnowDancers but I love it! It gave us a chance to see how the wolves worked and look out for more juicy stories.

“Aren‘t you going to get up?”
He put a hand on the curve of her hip, a possessive gesture that had already become
“No. Let‘s have more sex.”

Gah! Judd Lauren is something else. I never thought I’d ever fall in love with a Psy, let alone an Arrow. The feels people, the motherfucking feels! My gosh, my ovaries exploded! He is different from an alpha male and changeling but this male knows the moves to leave women panting after him. He’s probably my #1 love for this series! I am in awe with Brenna. She survived so much and managed to find love. I love that she never backed down and gave up. She kicked life’s ass, blow after blow. Go girl power!

This series really packs all the kinds of feels there is. Judd and Brenna’s story is like a roller coaster ride. There were so many ups and downs, I couldn’t keep my head straight sometimes. But surprisingly, I enjoyed it. I love the hurt, disappointment, betrayal, deception along with the positive feelings and happenings.

Unchained by Jennifer L. Armentrout

As a demon-hunter, Lily Marks shouldn’t have a problem with eliminating Julian. But when a traitor is amidst the Sanctuary, Lily became the prime suspect for her association with Julian. Their quest in proving her innocence opened up dark truths and secrets that would change history as she knew it. Could Lily find the real traitor before she loses everything? Or would her growing feelings for Julian destroy it all?

“It was like a date–a weird, twisted date that would probably end with them killing something.”

I love this book! It has a different concept of Nephilim from what I’ve read in the past and I always welcome new ideas. I admit that I read and liked this because its JLA… and angels. But I was so surprise by how much book hangover I had with this one. I think it took me two weeks to read a new book. Anyway, JLA created a brilliant new world. It was different, exciting and daring. This book is not something you read every day.

I love Lily. She’s reminds me of JLA’s other badass heroines but still a bit different. I absolutely adore Julian! Gah, this man is just so sexy, so sweet, so freaking perfect! I love him for Lily. They’re both so badass and crazy. I think they’ll actually balance out each other. It’s a bit of a cliché to have the forbidden romance of good versus evil but this story is much more that. JLA managed to bring magic into the story that tells the story wonderfully.

I thought this would be a series but it has been years since this was published… so I think it would be a standalone? Until JLA decided to continue it, that is. But I’m still hoping for a sequel, that ending deserves one!
